Why we need more LGBTQ+ inclusive professional development for educators

Only 6 states require schools to teach LGBTQ+ history. These states are California, New Jersey, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, and Nevada.

“Professional learning is a crucial component for equity work in the classroom. However, most participants cited having limited or no training on LGBTQ+ inclusion before engaging in this study.” (Colvin, 2021)

Despite growing public awareness of transgender identities and advances in trans-affirming education policies, the conditions in schools vary widely and extreme anti-trans political backlash and violence are on the rise.” (Mangin, et al. 2022)

Educators who engage with coaching to improve culturally relevant practices and instructional strategies report academic gains, more classroom participation, increased student confidence, and more positivity and excitement toward learning. (Holliday, 2021)
